AI Search Concepts
Mentions, recommendations, and citations are different levels of AI visibility. A business can be named without being recommended, and recommended without being strongly cited.
A mention means the AI names the business. This is useful because it shows the model has some awareness of the brand, but it is not enough by itself.
A brand can be mentioned in passing, listed as one option, or named because the prompt included the brand. That is why the report also checks whether the answer recommends the business and whether it provides evidence.
A recommendation means the business appears as a useful choice for the customer intent being tested. This matters more than a simple mention because the user may act on the shortlist.
If competitors are recommended more often, the issue may be clearer category evidence, stronger reviews, better service pages, more complete menus, stronger location details, or better proof.
A citation is strongest when it points to an owned page the business controls. A directory citation may still help, but it gives the business less control over the facts AI uses.
If the business is recommended but not cited, the next action is usually page-level: improve official pages so AI has a better source to attach to future answers.
